The lustre of June’s birthstone has captivated Hollywood icons and royals alike

The love affair between pearls and royals goes way back. June’s birthstone was a favourite of Grace Kelly, Diana, Princess of Wales, and more recently, the Duchess of Cambridge. The Queen – owner of perhaps the most fabulous jewellery collection on the planet – is said to treasure a pair of pearl earrings she was given by Queen Mary in 1947 over all of her other pieces.

Celebrities, too, have fallen for the pearl’s lustre. Audrey Hepburn, who is perhaps most frequently remembered draped in pearls as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, will forever be linked to her pearls in devotees’ minds. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was frequently seen with multiple strands around her neck, and one of her many fashion diktats was that “a woman need ropes and ropes of pearls”. They remain a hallmark of her eponymous maison to this day.

Today, Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are all on the list of high-profile women who keep their pearls on regular rotation (Whiteley recently showed off a pair of statement elongated pearl earrings from London brand By Pariah on Instagram). And pearls have captivated male stars, too. Harry Styles, A$AP Rocky and Joe Jonas all have pearl pieces in their jewellery collections.

One of the most famous pearls in history has links to Hollywood and royalty alike. Passed down through a long line of Spanish monarchs, La Peregrina was given to renowned magpie Elizabeth Taylor by her husband Richard Burton in 1969. Taylor famously claimed to have found the historic pearl in her dog’s mouth after misplacing it. “I just casually opened the puppy’s mouth and inside his mouth was the most perfect pearl in the world,” she said.
